SVT Health Center offers talk on healthcare jobs, student loan repayment

Homer, ALASKA—On Thursday, October 13, the SVT Health Center will offer a free presentation on health care jobs and student loan repayment options.
The first talk will be for interested high school students and will be held at 11:15 a.m. at Homer High School. The second talk will be for college students and members of the public and will be held at noon on the Kachemak Bay Campus, Pioneer Hall room 209. After the talk, presenters will lead a tour of the SVT Health Center, where refreshments will be provided.
Pat Sammartino, Alaska statewide recruiter for public health centers and the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium, will present the talks. Dr. Margit Sheinmel, physician at the SVT Health Center, and Cindy Epperson, a nurse also at the health center, will be available to answer questions.
The talk is part of the National Health Service Corps Community Day. The SVT Health Center is a National Health Service Corps qualifying health center. Multiple employees of SVT Health Center, including a physician and a dental hygienist, are having their student loans repaid as part of several repayment programs available to health care providers.
Student loan repayment programs for health care workers include programs through the National Health Service Corps, the Indian Health Service and Alaska’s Supporting Healthcare Access through Loan Repayment Program (SHARP).

SVT Health Center celebrates National Health Center Week
Local student wins free bicycle

Homer, ALASKA—The SVT Health Center celebrated National Health Center Week in early August with a focus on back-to-school and healthy lifestyles. The activities at the SVT Health Center included a drawing for a free bicycle, which was won by local teenager Lindsey Seneff, and a bounce house for younger children.
Families who visited the SVT Health Center during National Health Center Week received a backpack that they filled with free school supplies.
SVT Health Center Director Beckie Noble says that 68 students received sports/school physicals during National Health Center Week and 17 of those students also received dental screenings.
Representative Paul Seaton also staffed a booth with information about the Alaska Vitamin D Resolution, which aims to increase awareness of vitamin D deficiencies, testing and supplementation.
In July, Mayor James Hornaday issued a proclamation declaring the week of August 7 - 13 Health Center Week in Alaska. As part of the proclamation, Mayor Hornaday encouraged “all community residents to recognize and support the important contribution of Alaska’s health centers in improving the quality of life for all Alaskans.” In early August, Governor Sean Parnell also named August 7 - 13 Community Health Center Week.

SVT Health Center recognized for tobacco cessation program

Homer, ALASKA— The SVT Health Center was recently recognized for excellence in tobacco cessation by the American Academy of Family Physicians and Ask and Act: A Tobacco Cessation Project.
The SVT Health Center received the recognition after it completed the American Academy of Family Physicians Tobacco Cessation Office Champions Project. A full-page advertisement recognizing the health center was published in the August issue of the AAFP journal.
According to SVT Health Center Director Beckie Noble, the recognition was the direct result of education and outreach activities conducted by Darlene Moore, a health educator and certified tobacco treatment specialist.
“At the SVT Health Center, we promote wellness and work with patients so that they can make healthy lifestyle choices,” said Noble.
The Seldovia Village Tribe operates the SVT Health Center and will be opening the Wellness Center in December 2011. The Wellness Center will offer behavioral health, naturopathic, nutritional and complementary services.
